Renewable energy is not as "new" as you might think. Believe it or not work on solar cells began back in the early 1800’s, but it wasn’t until 1954 that the first solar panel was developed in New York. As for electricity generating windmills the year was 1888 in Ohio. We have come a long way since then, but still today coal, oil and natural gas, better known as fossil fuels, currently provides our country with more than 85% of all our energy consumed. Nearly two-thirds of our electricity and practically all our transportation are fossil fuels.
To try and combat this unacceptable usage, alternative energy associations are trying to educate the public on the dangers of high fossil fuel use.
